At the cross, everything is settled and everything is done; the price is paid – for your spirit, soul and body. The whole price was paid at the cross, why do you want to pay a price? And it’s not how hard you work for God; it’s what God did for you! It’s not what you do for Jesus; it’s what Jesus did for you. It’s not how much work and labour you put in. It is how much grace you have received and how much you trust in the fact that Jesus did it all. If we want to teach pure faith, it has to be grace. If it’s about works, then it’s law. Paul tells us that there are people who have crept in and they are perverting the grace, because they want to put a price on faith. But it is the gift of God! Now we know that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. Faith, however is also a spirit – ‘we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, I have believed, and therefore have I spoken. We too believe, and therefore we speak...' So faith is also a spirit and we have to trust the spirit of faith that is operating on the inside of us.
