Most of us have at least one cinema-related story or a happy movie memory to share. In addition to that, we are also living in a world where audio-visual media is rapidly becoming the primary mode of communication. From WhatsApp forwards in the video format, to memes which convey an idea in one image, and now online classes and workspaces across the globe due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the need to deciphering the meaning behind visual representations is imperative. Going forward, it will probably be among the most important skills one can acquire to avoid being manipulated by images, videos, and films. Restricting our access to film and audio-visual media may work as a solution in the short term, but the long-term goal should be to enable children and adults to become discerning consumers of media. With this aim, we seek to introduce you to basic concepts and ideas in film appreciation, which will enable you to articulate your thoughts about the movies you watch. The course will also familiarise you with the thought process that goes behind creating an experience for the film viewer, which is a collaborative effort between the director, cinematographer, production designer, editor, sound designer, actors and the other members of the crew.
