This course is a beginning course for willow weaving. For many people the very first encounter they have with willow is making a willow fish and this is often enough to birth a love and passion for willow weaving that will last a lifetime. This can lead on to basketry and working with sculptural willow weaving. It could be a very long road that will take you far, but this course provides you with an excellent first step.
You will learn how to make these fish, leaves and other items by creating the necessary frames and filling them in with a repeated figure of eight weave. You will explore how the material within the body of the weave can be experimented with for different effects and textures.
Not only will you learn how to make leaves and fish and how to adapt the weave to make other items, but I will give you advice and useful information on teaching these skills to groups; if you are a school teacher, forest school leader, scout, cub or guide leader you will find this a very useful resource.
We look at cultivated willow and the sourcing of materials from the wild to help get you going, and a little at how to prepare and use these materials.
Trust me, once you start weaving, you won’t want to stop.
