Medical Biochemistry: Metabolism of Carbohydrates

What You Will Learn!

  • Understanding Carbohydrate digestion & absorption
  • Learn the several pathways and how they are regulated
  • Clinical relevance of carbohydrate metabolism
  • Review Clinical case questions

Description

In this course, we will start our journey with the story of carbohydrate digestion and absorption in the intestines. all the way to how our body cells utilize the absorbed monosaccharide units. We will tell the story of how glucose, fructose and galactose are utilized in a well fed state and then what happens when we fast. To teach this in a very interesting manner, we have divided this course into four (4) sections with about fifteen (15) lecture videos all together

This course consists of fifteen lectures divided into 4 sections:

  • Introduction to Carbohydrate Metabolism:

    • Overview of Carbohydrate Digestion

    • Transient hyperglycemia and insulin release from the beta cells of the pancreas

    • Glucose Transporters

    • Glucose metabolic pathways,

    • Glycolysis; pathway, regulations and clinicals

    • pyruvate Dehydrogenase; pathway, regulations and clinicals

  • Energy Utilization pathways

    • Citric Acid Cycle; pathway, regulations and clinicals

    • Electron Transport Chain; Overview and Pathway

    • Clinical Relevance of the Electron Transport Chain

  • Glycogen, Fructose & Galactose Metabolism

    • Fructose Metabolism; pathway, regulations and clinicals

    • Galactose Metabolism; pathway, regulations and clinicals

    • Glycogenesis and Glycogenolysis; pathway and regulations

    • Glycogen Storage Diseases

  • Gluconeogenesis, Alcohol Metabolism & Hexose Monophosphate Shunt

    • Gluconeogenesis; pathway, regulations and clinicals

    • Alcohol Metabolism; pathway and clinicals

    • Hexose Monophosphate Shunt, NADPH & G6PD Deficiency

We will also consider some clinical Multiple Choice Questions Review as it relates to Carbohydrate Metabolism.
