As my experience in medical coding and the knowledge acquired from the AAPC exam and education or monthly CEU's. The workshop is the only standalone inpatient coding certification (Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) ) in the healthcare industry.
The reason to complete this certification as an Inpatient Coder is that the exam tests the competencies required to perform the job of an inpatient coder. I have earned the CIC credential and have proven expertise in inpatient documentation review, abstract inpatient acute care encounters, coding proficiency with ICD-10 CM, ICD-10 PCS, and inpatient payment methodologies.

Expertise in assigning accurate ICD-10-CM medical codes for ICD diagnoses and PCS procedures performed in the inpatient setting. The CIC exam includes ten acute care inpatient cases in a fill-in-the-blank format. Examinees must demonstrate coding ability without multiple-choice options.

  • Understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology required to correctly code facility services and diagnoses.

  • Knowledge of pharmacology to include common medications; their uses and side effects.

  • Understand UHDDS Guidelines.

  • Ability to identify documentation deficiencies.

  • Finding Query providers for proper code capture or for more specificity.

  • Capture POA and use of the same indicators.

  • Strong ability to integrate coding and reimbursement rule changes in a timely manner and the UB04 for proper reimbursement.

  • Assignment MS-DRG.

  • Impact of readmissions within a 30 day period.

  • 72-hour rule and how services occurring prior to admission are reported.

  • Understanding of outpatient reimbursement methodologies (OPPS) and how it differs from IPPS.

  • ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS

  • You need to Work in or for a hospital/facility

  • Expertise in medical record review to abstract information also codes accurate inpatient coding.

  • Superior knowledge of current rules, regulations, and issues regarding medical coding, compliance, and reimbursement under MS-DRG and IPPS systems.

  • Understand different types of DRGs (eg, MS-DRG or APR-DRG).
