In this course, Circles of 5ths 2.0, we will learn what the Circle of 5ths is and how to apply it to playing the harp. By the end of the course, you will be able to see how it applies to chord progressions and melodic structure.
Handout resources include a beautifully designed infographic of the Circle of 5ths created just for this course, a three-finger exercise, a four-finger exercise, an etude called Corinthian Bells, and a harp arrangement of jazz standard Fly Me to the Moon (in easy and intermediate levels).
This course is for you if you are new to the harp, are returning to the harp, are interested in learning theory, want to learn a jazz standards or want to learn specifically about the Circle of 5ths.
Certified Clinical Musician, Monica Schley, has a BA from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She has formally studied, harp, piano, clarinet, pipe organ, voice, composition, and poetry. She has been playing harp for 25 years. As a teacher, she is an affiliate with Dusty Strings Music School and also maintains a private studio. As a performer, Monica has played with indie rockers, jazz luminaries and pop stars. Her performance history is a blend of yin and yang, ranging from the intimate sublime to large-scale performance halls around the country. She composes for her group The Daphnes, which released an album, Braids of Kabuya, in 2018. Monica’s teaching method draws from folk, classical, songwriting, theory, ensemble work, improvisation and pop music using a Salzedo-influenced method. She thinks that everyone’s learning process is a little bit unique, just like the harp.
