Cognitive science is the field of studying human mind & brain, and how the brain interprets and processes all sensory information into perceived knowledge and stores in the different types of memories. It focuses on the mind as how it represents and manipulates the knowledge and mental frames for the successful and happy survival in life. Understanding the Cognitive psychology will help the individuals to negate various false perceptions and unnecessary emotional disturbances in their life. This will reduce the tightness and self-destructive thought patterns gradually and finally brings a composed, calm and balanced mind and life style.
Behavioral Science investigates about the Cognitive, Social, Environmental and Historical or Genetic background and influences on psychological development or creation of mind. Since, the cognition is an observable phenomenon, it is more a science. But Behavior is quite unpredictable and involves certain pattern of manipulations in the minds of the individuals. Therefore, it is an art too. If the manipulation as a psychological process, is productive and having ethical integrity, then it can bring a plenty of happiness and positive physical & mental health to the individual himself/herself and the surrounding society. Otherwise, it slowly reduce the efficacy of our natural living system.
Together, these two fields of knowledge can be used as a psycho therapeutic tool to deal with various psychological problems, maladaptation and abnormalities. That’s how the concept “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy” (CBT) was emerged. Originally, Aaron Temkin Beck who was an American psychiatrist and a professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, created CBT and brought it out for psycho therapeutic purposes in 1960s. Now, with the technological advancement and widened horizon of psychology, psychiatry, neurology and sociology in the modern era, CBT has been accepted as a practically applicable therapy for various psychological issues, including Depression.
Let us respect the knowledge, understand with realistic purpose and help as much as people in our environment for the better, healthy, productive and happy society.
