Unreinforced concrete masonry walls are widely used in high-rise and medium-rise commercial and residential buildings with loadbearing and non-loadbearing walls. I have personally designed the masonry walls for a 30,000 seat stadium, train and metro station buildings which means you can see these walls everywhere in construction and can involve structural engineers, architects contractors and builders.
So being familiar with the concepts of the Masonry Wall design can be beneficial for anyone in the construction industry.
In this course, I will start with the applications of masonry walls in construction and then I will go through the fundamentals of masonry/block wall design including different support conditions for the wall, how to treat openings in the walls, different design checks (such as wind loading, earthquake and robustness), fire checks as well as calculating bending moment capacity of the walls and finally lateral load capacity of the wall.
Also, we will go through a practical example and will do all of these checks step by step. This is actually a real-world example of the design that we do in our everyday job.
By the end of this course, you will learn about the fundamental and practical design considerations of masonry walls and will be able to design a Non-Loadbearing Masonry Wall similar to what a professional engineer does.
