Description

Thinking about the present and future generations requires knowledge (head), a real concern (heart) and action (hand). This course makes you aware of key environmental concerns, sustainability responses and the approach of 3H for more effective responses. The course is personally and professionally developmental in nature. You will learn about environmental and sustainability concerns, some conceptions and models of sustainable development, principles of 3H approach and the application of these principles. The course empowers you as person, citizen and role-player to become effective in environmental and sustainability responses. This course is different in that it focuses on the 3H approach which is necessary in all the three dimensions of sustainability viz. social, economic and biophysical, and in all aspects of one’s life.

The course shares knowledge which is a value aspect of the head component, prompts reflection of integrity and attitude towards fellow human beings and the natural environment (a value aspect of the heart) and advocates action (a value aspect of the hand), without which the status of environmental issues is unlikely to change in the near future. It is true that policy and agreements are necessary, however the 3H approach is significant to translate policy issues into practice, to be innovative and transform from that which is detrimental to the environment and humanity. Each and every person counts in progressing towards environmental impact reduction. The 3H approach promotes success through right action even when no one is watching.

The course provides context by tracing an environmental time-line from the 1960s, critically examining the concept of sustainable development, its conception and misconception, enlightening on the 3H (head, heart and hand) principles, reflecting on environmental leaders who have advocated for environmental transformation through 3H. The course develops your environmental and sustainability skills through practical application.

The course is structured for development in a simple yet effective way to make learning and understanding easy as you work at your own pace. Each lecture has focused sub-sections to structure your learning and easy to follow. You are guided along the way with activities for you to engage in. The activities and assessments are open book so there is no need to fear - just enjoy the journey. The course is structured as a life-long learning experience. There are no pre-requisites. The course is designed for professional, non-professional or interested citizens with concern for the environmental challenges we as humanity presently face. The course adds value to the way environmental and sustainability issues can be effectively approached using the 3H (head, heart and hand) principles.
