About Freestyle Jive:

The Freestyle Jive danced in parts of India, especially in Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai and even Goa is none like any other dance, danced in any other part of the world. It is a gift, a remanence and a legacy left behind by our dear Anglo Indian friends. Though the Anglo Indian population has largely dwindled over the last few decades, (since they have left India for a brighter future to outside shores especially to the Gulf, Australia and Canada) they sure did leave behind a treasured heritage of dressing, language, music and dance. As a kid, I had the chance and the good fortune of growing up in the Cantonment area of Bangalore - home to many Anglo Indian families, especially due to the presence of multiple churches catering to the vast population of churchgoers. Thanks to the church youth group which mainly consisted of Anglo Indian girls and boys, my teenage years were overtly exposed to social dancing and the fun Anglo Indian lifestyle, food, music and of course their crazy parties. Since I liked the dance so much, I actually went about re-inventing the dance to make it accessible to everyone, especially due to its simplicity and the lack of cumbersome technique to master.

The moves are simple, lead-able and what's more important is that with a little practice and improvisation, the moves and patterns can be danced to any form of music.

The classes have been designed, to enable you to do:

  • Basics dance tricks, cheat codes and some party moves for you to enjoy yourself and impress the rest!

  • Body posture & simple footwork to dance to any music

  • Hand/leg coordination to the music and dance etiquettes

  • Partner movement and coordination

  • Get a feel of the rhythm and musicality.

  • Get a hang of lead and follow with the least effort possible.

All you need is a bit of discipline and the will to dedicate 15-30 minutes tops to practise until you have mastered a move a day. Practise, practise and practise a lot more until the move becomes a habit through building muscle memory.

Have a great time and please write back to me, if you ever get stuck or need my help to get out of a situation.

Cheers and happy dancing.
