Level 1-Story 11, Elf Eck, is a story about a mother hen who’s visited by a magical elf that has marvelous magical powers.
The story is written around the phonetic elements the short e and the k, x, z, ck, qu and shows the reader how each letter is used in words.
The MAIN IDEA, “I Will Help Where I Am Needed,” demonstrates the value of a single person assisting where they can most serve others while making everyone’s journey a little lighter.
The PRE STORY BACKGROUND provide an excellent way for the student to understand events leading to Elf Eck coming to earth. Elf Eck is from another planet, Platonian, and travels to earth and is hatched from an egg and how a special mother hen raises her newly arrived Elf Eck and helps the people of earth.
LISTENING TO THE STORY WITHOUT NARRATION allows the student to hear the words pronounced along with viewing the story on screen, demonstrating the relationship between letters, words and sounds.
PHONICS, WRITING AND SPELLING provides the student with creative ways to listen to their voice, and to recognize the sound that’s said by others.

FICTION NONFICTION WRITING includes several genres that the CompuRead program stories are written around. It also emphasizes the story title, main idea and the specific genre, Science Fiction, that Elf Eck was written under.
VOCABULARY AND EXPRESSIVE SPEAKING includes poetry, sight words, sounding and spelling words from the story and phrases to increase a young child’s vocabulary and sight word mastery.
SCIENCE BACKGROUND includes a discussion of how a chick hatches from an egg – a very interesting description for a young child’s mind.
STORY MAPPING again reviews the story telling and writing process and shows the various aspects of writing and how a story is composed.
HOME FUN contains activities the student can be involved with at home to assist in the learning to read process.
The Reading Skills Review provides a way for the student and teacher to review the concepts learned and tracks the student’s progress through the CompuRead Courses program.
