The International Organization of Standardization (ISO) is a network of national standards bodies (NSB). Each member represents ISO in its country. Individuals or companies cannot become ISO members. ISO standards are developed by groups of experts which form technical committees (TCs). Each TC deals with a different subject and is made upof representatives of industry, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), governments and other stakeholders, who are put forward by ISO’s members. Being nominated as an expertdoesn’t mean a person is academically qualifi ed or is more knowledgeable than anyone else in a subject. They must be able to demonstrate expertise to their peers on the TC insome area of the committee’s work and be available to attend ISO committee meetingswherever they are convened. Not every subject matter expert can commit to this level of participation, as it can be quite time consuming. The experts are not employees of ISO, and therefore ISO’s role is as a facilitator rather than a developer of standards, as it doesn’t fund their development.
