Description

Size reduction in a metallurgical plant refers to the process of reducing the size of raw materials or ore to a smaller, more manageable size for further processing. It involves crushing and grinding operations to break down large chunks or particles into smaller pieces.

This size reduction is necessary to increase the surface area of the material, improve reaction rates during subsequent metallurgical processes such as smelting or refining, and facilitate the separation of valuable metals or minerals from the ore. Various equipment such as crushers & mills, are used in the size reduction process to achieve the desired particle size distribution.

The primary purpose of size reduction is to liberate valuable minerals or metals from the surrounding waste or gangue material. By reducing the particle size, the surface area of the material increases, allowing for more efficient extraction of valuable components during subsequent processes, such as flotation or leaching.

  1. Crushing: Crushing involves the application of mechanical force to break large rocks, ores, or minerals into smaller fragments. This can be achieved through various crushing machines, such as jaw crushers, cone crushers, or impact crushers.

  2. Milling: Milling is a more specialized form of grinding that involves the use of milling machines, such as Ball Mills or Rod Mills. These machines use rotating cutters/lifters to remove material from the workpiece, resulting in the desired particle size reduction.
