This course is an introduction to Lee and Marlene Canter’s Assertive Discipline, a system developed in the 1970s and how it still has relevance in today's classrooms.
“The relationship between teacher and pupils is of fundamental importance to effective teaching.”
Many teachers cite their skill in classroom management as the dimension of their work that is the most challenging; and it is the area of training that many beginning and pre-service teachers feel is lacking. Therefore, we will discuss modernising the original, authoritarian concept and developing it to embrace a more democratic approach to keeping a classroom orderly and focused on learning.
Assertive Discipline is a systematic and structured approach that assists educators to run an organised, teacher-in-charge classroom environment. The original approach grew out of Canter’s identifying students’ undesirable behaviour which was occurring in classrooms, and the fact that teachers were not able to control it. Lee Canter identified a lack of training in the behaviour management area in a classroom setting. Together, he and Marlene developed an easy-to-learn approach to help teachers take charge of their classrooms.
Throughout the course you will be provided with quizzes to review your knowledge of the subjects covered. There are also a number of suggested readings and activities to strengthen understanding.
