Welcome to the online course, "Identifying & Supporting Gifted Children in the Classroom." This short introductory course is designed for educators like you, who are dedicated to unlocking the full potential of every student in your classroom, including those with exceptional abilities. This course aims to help the classroom teacher understand giftedness as a package deal of strengths and challenges. It hopes to inspire the teacher to find differentiated opportunities to encourage the gift that can result in great academic success in the classroom but also to understand and support the special emotional needs of gifted students.

In Part 1 of the course, we will embark on a journey to broaden our perspective on intelligence, recognizing that all children possess unique forms of intelligence that go beyond traditional academic achievements. We will delve into the realm of giftedness, understanding the distinct cognitive and emotional characteristics that set these students apart. Through enlightening discussions and a Traits of Giftedness checklist, we will differentiate between bright children and truly gifted children, while exploring the concept of asynchronous development and the challenges it poses.

Equipped with this foundational knowledge, Part 2 of the course will explore the concept of intensity in gifted children. Intensities, also known as excitabilities, significantly influence a gifted child's social-emotional functioning and learning processes. We will delve into the world of Movement Intensity, Sensory Intensity, Intellectual Intensity, Imaginational Intensity, and Emotional Intensity, learning how to empathize and accommodate these intensities in our classrooms.

Part 3 will address the topic of anxiety, a common challenge faced by many gifted and sensitive students. Understanding and supporting these students better will be a key focus, empowering you to create a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for all students.

By the end of this course, you will develop a holistic understanding of giftedness as a multi-dimensional aspect of a child's identity, encompassing both strengths and weaknesses.
