The purpose of this course is to provide learners/students with a basic skills in computing, concept of nursing informatics and vocabularies for nursing informatics. Subsequently, the various web tools used in information technology, system integration and concept of intra-operability will be discussed. Furthermore, management and change processes in nursing informatics as well as contemporary issues in information technology and policies in Ghana among others will also be discussed.
The courses is also intended to provide learners/ students with a basic understanding of Health/Medical Informatics and its application in nursing and midwifery. It introduces the definition of data, information and knowledge as well as what defines a system and models. It also places a lot of emphasis on the use of electronic patient records systems for the definition and implementation of the nursing process. A central focus will be issues relating to standards, taxonomies, privacy, confidentiality, security and the ethical use of patient information. This will include discussions of relevant legislation. By the end of this course, students will be able to:

· Investigate solutions in information technology by using web and other research tools
· Understand system integration and concept of intra-operability

· Discuss system implementation and maintenance
· Appreciate contemporary issues and health policies in Ghana
· Develop a working taxonomy
