My experience with curly hair clients is that some are real experts with their own curls and some need your professional guidance with their curls and how best to maintain them.
I get questions about curly hair updos all the time in my Updo and HairstyleEducation FB group. Do you work with the natural curls or should you use a curling iron and add more curls. Ask your curly hair client if she wants a natural look or a formal style. If natural, do not use any tools and just section the hair with just your fingers.
