I often hear students say, "I love art history, but I hate Modernism! Why is it so important? A child can do it. Only bougie hipsters pretend to like this stuff!" In response to these concerns, I have worked hard over the years to make Modern art more accessible, understandable and enjoyable for my students. This one-hour course, Understand (and Appreciate) Modern Art in One Hour, encapsulates these efforts. We will cover the major art movements in the Modern period, including, Arts + Crafts, Symbolism, Abstraction, Expressionism, Cubism, Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, Color Field Painting, Non-Subjective art, and more. The course is organized into three short lectures and lasts about one hour. It includes a short but comprehensive open access eText on Modernism, as well as a study guide and terms sheet. I have been teaching art history at a major research university for over ten years, and I have created dozens of online courses for thousands of students. I promise that in one hour you will understand Modern art. You may not end up loving Modernism, but I guarantee you will have a greater appreciation for it. The next time your partner or mother-in-law wants to take you to a Modern art exhibit, you’ll be able to not only enjoy your visit, but wow your loved ones with your savvy knowledge of Modernism! I'm glad you're here.
