Worm and worm wheel gears are widely used for nonparallel, non intersecting and right angle gear drive system applications where a high transmission gearing ratio is required. In comparison to other gear, belt and chain transmission elements, worm and worm wheel gear sets tend to offer a more compact solution with high reduction. In certain configurations a worm and worm wheel gear set can provide sufficiently high friction to be self-locking which can be a desirable feature if a defined position is required for a gear train if it is not braked or unpowered. In this course basics, terminology of worm and worm gear pair is covered. Also, it deals with force analysis of the worm and worm wheel gear pair. Material selection for worm and worm wheel gear pair is discussed. Course assess lubrication, cooling and support requirements for worm gear box.
This course describes the fundamental concepts and design procedures for the systems which includes the worm gears. The course also includes the design of worm gear for particular applications. At the end of course the students will be in a position to design the proper gearbox applicable in automobiles and in mechanical industries. While designing a worm and worm wheel gear box the heat generation is taken into consideration.
