Description

The zeibekiko is an ancient Greek folk Thracian dance of the 'Zeibekos' (it has an etymological root of 'Zeus') and was danced in remote antiquity in honor of the Asia Minor deity Cybele (goddess of wild nature) as an expression of the union of the spirit with the body.

The zeibekikos is considered a strictly male dance which, due to its dance movements, is also called "the eagle dance" consisting of basic steps of Byzantine main meter drowned in specific circular movement figures that can be performed even in a space that does not exceed a square meter. In a social dimension, it evolved into a rebetiko dance (1850-1950). Today, it is also danced by women who, in their own way, want to express their feelings by folding a feminine expression of movement.

The following video contains dance content. It provides basic dance moves analyzed and explained for any dance level student of any age. It includes the first steps of Zeibekiko dance, a Greek Dance that was originally a war dance. It has developed as an improvised dance performed from a single male. This compilation focuses on songs with the very distinctive time signature of 9/8. A unique time signature with a clear beat and a very heart touching melody. For many, it is a way to express personal feelings felt during the dance. The video is performed under music with a clear beat for educational reasons. From this video one can learn the rhythm of the music, walking to the music as well as performing a beginners basic step. When one dances Zeibekiko it is common that people gather around the dancer and start clapping to the rhythm (9/8)
