Hurricanes are massive systems that use the latent heat energy of the ocean to cause strong winds and massive storm surges to pile upon coastlines. They can be predictable sometimes in terms of formation activity but unpredictable with respect to intensity and/or exact track at landfall. The National Hurricane Center and NOAA are the ultimate go-to resource for learning about and tracking hurricanes but there is some great resources for the layman weather watcher to track and understand hurricanes better even if you don't live in a hurricane prone zone of a country.
