Description

Following the PMI Standard for Program Management, I will guide you through the most common questions that you might face during the exam to get certified as PgMP. This is a set of various courses that will explore each knowledge domain of the SPM (Standard for Program Management).

“Program Benefits Management is the performance domain that defines, creates, maximizes, and deliver the benefits provided by the program” This is first phrase that you will find in Chapter 4 of the SPM. In my opinion is one of the boldest definitions you will find in the standard. Benefits are the core element of the program management. If we would need to establish an analogy here, we strongly believe that projects:product/service::programs:benefits. Benefits, as we will learn, are gains realized by an organization and beneficiaries through portfolio, program, or project’s outputs.

Projects have clear boundaries to produce outcomes or deliverables. Meanwhile, programs are focus on producing benefits for the performing organization or specific stakeholders. Therefore, expect this chapter to be an essential cornerstone in the program management. Keep a keen eye for details and explanations contained in this chapter. By identifying the nature of the activities related to benefits management you can ensure a valuable quantity of correct answers during your exam. Normally, questions related to benefits could be situational. What were you doing as program manager if you do X? or, what to do as program manager after completing X activity? We are confident that after reading this chapter, you should be able to easily group benefit activities correspondingly with the following five (5) stages:

  • Benefits Identification: identify and quality the benefits

  • Benefits Analysis & Planning: establish the program benefits management plan

  • Benefits Delivery: ensure program delivers the benefits as previously planned

  • Benefits Transition: ensure benefits transition to operational areas

  • Benefits Sustainment: ensure continued generation of the improvements and outcomes delivered by the program.

These five (5) stages occur uncorrelated to the program lifecycle phases. Of course, if you were appointed by the sponsor to assume the leadership of a program from the very beginning then there are some collinearities to be expected.
