Sociology is the study of social life. It is a science that studies society and is essential to understand what is versus what is not. For a sociologist, this means that ideas are tested and based on observation. Sociologists use tools and scientific methods to understand how humans behave and question why we do certain things. Sociologists may use qualitative and quantitative research methods to collect findings.
Many sociologists today build careers in fields such as: Social Services, Administrative Support, Management, Teachers, Sales and Marketing and Public Relations etc.
By and large, Sociology is the study of the collective group rather than the study of an individual. The task of studying the individual is left to psychologists. In any event, social groups are important. People live much of their lives belonging to social groups. Society consists of individuals who live together in a geographic area where they interact more with each other rather than interact with outsiders. Interaction between the individual and the group is a two-way process in which each influences the other.
Some factors that are an integral part of socialization include: family, education, religion, politics, economies, health; a shared culture and/or language.
Ultimately, socialization is the lifelong process of learning to become a member of the social world beginning at birth and continuing until death.
