The Science of Learning: How the Brain Learns

What You Will Learn!

  • Understand how a student's brain learns
  • Identify multiple methods of active learning, both online and offline
  • Learn to create class activities that lead to long-term learning
  • Learn to create engaging homework activities that encourage active learning

Description

Did you know that the human brain forgets around 50% of what it learns within 24 hours? Why does this happen, and what can we, as educators, do to help?

Join this class and discover how you can help all students have engaging, lasting learning experiences. You will learn principles of neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and the learning sciences that apply to learners of any age. In addition to mastering the theory behind these educational strategies, you will learn five easy ways to use them in your classroom–or Zoom room or kitchen table, for all of you tutors and homeschool educators!

This class will teach you all the best strategies that I learned during my time at the University of Cambridge (MPhil Psychology & Education) and my many years as a middle and high school educator.

After completing this course, you will know the following:

- How students form long-term memories

- The neuroscience behind why students work hard to learn something one day but forget it the next

- How to implement the science-backed strategies of active recall and spaced repetition

- Which common study techniques have been found to be shockingly ineffective for long-term learning and what to do instead

- In-class activities and at-home assignments that strengthen long-term learning

Who Should Attend!

  • Teachers, principals, professors, tutors, homeschoolers, parents, and any other educators who work with students in K-12 and/or college.
