SPHR Preparation

Preparing for exams can be overwhelming, especially when you don’t know where to start. Fortunately, there are several options available that can assist you in the preparation of your SPHR exam.

There is no single preparation method that can meet every candidate’s needs and we urge you to use a variety of tools and resources to enhance your understanding of general HR principles and HR exam content.


Am I Eligible for this Certification

To be eligible for the SPHR you must meet one of the following conditions for education and/or experience: Have at least four years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a Master’s degree or higher, Have at least five years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a Bachelor’s degree, OR Have at least seven years of experience in a professional-level HR position.


What Is the Exam Format and Length?

Exam Time: 2 hours and 30 minutes (plus 30 minutes administration time)

Exam Length: 115 scored questions (mostly multiple-choice) + 25 pretest questions


SPHR Exam Weighting by Functional Area:

Leadership and Strategy (40%)

Leading the HR function by developing HR strategy, contributing to organizational strategy,

influencing people management practices, and monitoring risk.


Talent Planning and Acquisition (16%)

Forecast organizational talent needs and develop strategies to attract and engage new talent.


Learning and Development (12%)

Develop training, development, and employee retention strategies.


Total Rewards (12%)

Monitor the effectiveness of compensation and benefit strategies for attracting, rewarding,

and retaining talent.


Employee Relations and Engagement (20%)

Develop and/or monitor strategies impacting employee satisfaction and performance including diversity

and inclusion, safety, security, and labor strategies.
