Description

CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia is a masterpiece of children’s literature. In this close reading of the first published book in the series, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, we will discover spiritual themes and examine character development & symbolism - all with humor, insight and fun!

Each chapter in the book is given its own lecture video, in which I talk on the interconnectedness of the plot, themes and characters, and in which I use green screen, Powerpoint presentations, sound effects and other tools to make the videos entertaining and engaging.

I also make connections to CS Lewis’ friendship with JRR Tolkien, pointing out similarities here and there between The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings.

This course is designed for all ages and for all backgrounds. I have been teaching these books to high school and middle school students online for many years, and have geared the Udemy version of this course to adults - making this book accessible both to fans of CS Lewis and to those who are new to his writings.

And although I point out the many Christian strands that Lewis (as a devout Christian) weaves into this tale, the course is not designed specifically for Christian readers (though of course they are welcome), but rather for anyone interested in approaching the complexities of literature, for anyone eager to learn the basics of literary criticism - and for anyone who wants to have fun reading a thrilling and exciting work of juvenile fantasy!

Who Should Attend!

  • Fans of CS Lewis, fantasy fiction, Christian symbolism and literature.
