Description

How can an evolving, continuously emerging technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI) be managed to ensure responsible and effective use in the workplace? That is the leadership challenge this course helps you plan for.

AI provides significant opportunities for catalysing innovation and improving productivity but also presents significant risks. ‘Hallucinations’, privacy breaches, and negative outcomes such as financial loss, litigation, reputational damage, health and safety consequences, and even death, have all been attributed to AI use. Shadow AI in the workplace potentially increases these risks by AI use being unknown and uncontrolled.

This short course poses three provocations:

  1. Workplaces need an AI-ready culture to deploy AI effectively

  2. Robust AI governance is necessary to control AI risks

  3. Human skills are needed for responsible and effective AI

In the course, we consider risks and outcomes, presenting compelling reasons why AI use in the workplace must be managed to ensure responsible and effective deployment. We explore why an organisational culture that promotes flexibility, individual responsibility and the ability to adapt, is necessary, and provide an introduction to the organisational design, Mesh, to enable such an approach. We cover governance considerations for empowering responsible decision-making by personnel across the organisation, and the implications for skills development given the rapidly evolving nature of AI.

Design Cairns will help guide your planning for AI use in the workplace. They provide frameworks for considering and implementing approaches covered under each provocation.

The course is relevant to senior leaders considering the deployment of AI across their organisation; leaders incorporating the use of AI by their team; and individuals using AI. It is designed to be personalised and quick diagnostics will aid decision-making about content to focus on, while completing the whole course will provide a comprehensive overview of considerations, approaches and planning frameworks for managing AI use in the workplace.

Led by founder of Ardcairn, Grainne Hamilton, FRSA and member of the RSA AI Network, the course features a Question & Answer session with AI standards expert Kerry Sheehan, formerly of the UK Government PM/Cabinet Office who worked on the UK AI standards.
