USMLE stands for United States Medical Licensing Examination, which is a series of exams required for medical licensure in the United States. The "Psychiatry USMLE" refers to the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) exam, which is one of the exams in the USMLE series that assesses a medical student's knowledge in various medical specialties, including psychiatry. The Psychiatry USMLE is a computer-based test consisting of multiple-choice questions and is designed to assess the medical student's knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatry. The exam covers topics such as diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, psychotherapy, pharmacology, and legal and ethical issues related to psychiatry. Passing the Psychiatry USMLE is one of the requirements for medical licensure in the United States and is necessary for medical students who want to become licensed to practice medicine, including psychiatry. The USMLE Step 2 CK is usually taken in the fourth year of medical school, after the student has completed the required coursework in psychiatry.

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step examination program for medical licensure in the United States sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) that physicians with a medical degree and international medical graduates must pass after successful completion of medical training to receive their medical license and begin practicing medicine.

States may enact additional testing and/or licensing requirements. Physicians with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree must pass either the USMLE or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) exam for medical licensure.

USMLE series of examinations. It is part of the licensing requirements for Doctors of Medicine (M.D.) and international medical graduates to practice medicine in the United States. The USMLE Step 3 exam is considered the final step in the series of medical licensure examinations. Generally, it is a pre-requisite of the majority of the state licensing boards.


USMLE Step 3 tests several concepts that are often required to provide general health care to a patient. USMLE Step 3 is a mandatory exam that must be passed in order to obtain license as a practicing physician. Some International Medical Graduates are required to pass USMLE Step 3 in order to obtain an H1 Visa.


Most of the USMLE Step 3 exam (75 percent) consists of multiple choice questions, while the remaining 25 percent are clinical case simulations. A full description of the content of the exam can be found on the USMLE website. USMLE Step 3 exams are delivered online and are available throughout the year to the examinees. The examinee needs to register via a state licensing board for this exam.
