Description

This course is created for high school educators and high school students who are learning remotely, face-to-face, or via home school. The five-paragraph essay is the standard essay writing assignment. Once you have learned how to write the five-paragraph essay, you are prepared to tackle any other type of essay. Additionally, once you perfect the five-paragraph essay, you will be able to apply the techniques you learned to areas of your life outside the classroom.

The five-paragraph essay format is the most common essay a student can face. The name results from the five-paragraph structure: one introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a final paragraph to conclude. This five-lecture course will introduce students to the components of a five paragraph essay: thesis statement, organizational sentence (statement), introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, topic sentences, supporting details, transition words, concluding sentence, and concluding paragraph.

Each lecture provides a template for each section of the five-paragraph essay that can be used for any standard five-paragraph essay. The instructor for this course, models writing each paragraph and gives specific examples of an outlined five-paragraph essay. Furthermore, the instructor shares her experiences and expertise as a former high school educator to assist current educators in developing lesson plans for essay writing that are inclusive to all learning levels and abilities.

This course is detailed and utilizes repetition, modeling, wait-time, and guided instruction to assist students and educators in learning and teaching the five-paragraph essay process.
